Welcome to the O'Rourke Library Media Center

The media center supports Alabama's School Library Media Plan for the 21st Century Learner, the basis of our curriculum program, and the Information Literacy Skills published by the American Association of School Librarians and the American Library Association.

Mission Statement

"Our library is committed to providing quality print and electronic resources while fostering information literacy skills through effective research and retrieval as well as developing a lifelong love of reading."

The O'Rourke Elementary Library Media Center uses Destiny as its automated management system. Destiny may be accessed from any computer throughout the school.  We provide open access for all students. The media center is open for circulation from 7:50 to 2:30 daily.

Because collaborative planning between the classroom teacher and the library media specialist is important to the learning process, the library media center serves as an extension of the classroom.  Through collaborative planning, students have the chance to gain knowledge through varied learning opportunities.

Books are checked out for two (2) weeks.  No books are checked out to students who have overdue books.  No fines are charged for overdue books; however, students must pay to replace lost or damaged books.

7 Habits in the Media Center

Be Proactive!

O'Rourke Jags come to the Media Center prepared with our books and library folder/library card. We use shelf markers to keep the books in order, keep their work area neat, properly log out of the computer when we are done, and put our chairs back.

Begin With the End in Mind!

O'Rourke Jags have a purpose for coming to the library. We focus on finding books we like within our reading range and on achieving our Accelerated Reader goals.

Put First Things First!

O'Rourke Jags listen and follow directions so that we may be successful. We use our time wisely to check out books, take tests, and properly complete our assignments.

Think Win-Win!

O'Rourke Jags balance desire for getting what we want with consideration for what others want. We make deposits into each others emotional bank accounts. When conflicts arise we look for other alternatives.

Seek First to Understand Then to be Understood!

O'Rourke Jags listen to other people's ideas and feelings. We try to see things from their viewpoints. We listen to others without interrupting. We are confident in voicing our ideas and look people in the eyes when we are speaking to them.

Synergize!

O'Rourke Jags value each other's strengths and learn from each other. We get along well with each other even though we may be different. We work well in groups. We know that by teaming with others we can create better solutions than anyone of us can alone. We are humble.

Sharpen the Saw!

O'Rourke Jags read fiction and nonfiction books to nourish our mind with all the wonderful knowledge found between the pages. We feed our soul by finding truths about ourselves in the stories we read. We find meaningful ways to help each other.
